What is laryngeal paralysis in dogs?
Laryngeal paralysis in dogs is a potentially serious respiratory emergency, especially in geriatric patients. Laryngeal paralysis is a condition in which the cartilages of the larynx (arytenoids) do not open properly during inhalation. This occurs due to a failure of nerve impulses to the muscles of the larynx, which obstructs the passage of air to the lungs.
In respiratory crisis situations, speed of action and the availability of appropriate equipment in the clinic can make the difference between effective resolution and more invasive procedures.
How to treat laryngeal paralysis in dogs without resorting to a tracheotomy
A 13-year-old female Labrador was admitted after
suffering a respiratory crisis the previous day. An endoscopy was performed, confirming the diagnosis of laryngeal paralysis.
Given the clinical situation, immediate action was necessary.
Fortunately, the clinic had an 18 mm transparent silicone laryngeal prosthesis, which allowed the functional airway obstruction to be resolved without the need for a tracheostomy at that time.

The patient is progressing satisfactorily, with excellent recovery from sedation. The attached image shows the dog calm and stable after the procedure.

Silicone stents are compatible with X-rays.
Control X-rays are taken. As can be seen in the image, the silicone stent is transparent but clearly visible on X-ray, which facilitates monitoring and verification of its correct position.

Why is it important to have an ABTVet kit in your clinic?
This case reinforces a practical and highly relevant message in respiratory emergencies:
Having equipment available in the clinic is vital for responding quickly to airway crises.
The availability of a silicone laryngeal prosthesis can help avoid unnecessary tracheostomies in selected scenarios.
The radiographic visibility of these devices provides safety in post-procedure monitoring.
