Silicone endoprosthesis for dogs with BOAS or laryngeal collapse: an effective and minimally invasive solution

In dogs suffering from these respiratory disorders such as brachycephalic syndrome (BOAS) or laryngeal collapse, breathing can become a constant struggle.

In such cases, having an effective and minimally invasive solution can make all the difference. Silicone stents are emerging as a novel and safe alternative to traditional methods such as tracheostomy tubes. But why are they so effective?

What does the science say about silicone stents?

A study published in the Journal of Small Animal Practice (Trinterud et al., 2014) evaluated the use of silicone stents in 18 dogs with acute upper airway obstruction. The results clearly support the usefulness of these prostheses in veterinary clinical practice.

Benefits of silicone stents

1. Easy placement and removal

The stents were implanted using a controlled surgical technique and were removed without complications or additional sedation, simply with traction. This reduces stress for both the patient and the practitioner.

2. Compatibility and short-term safety

None of the dogs had any serious immediate postoperative complications. In fact, more than half did not require a permanent tracheostomy, reflecting the effectiveness of the stent in resolving or stabilising the respiratory emergency.

3. Increased stability

Silicone stents have a shape and structure that allows them to remain in place without frequent displacement, reducing the risk of accidental obstruction or leakage.

4. Patient comfort and ease of maintenance

In cases of laryngeal collapse, the silicone stent acts as an internal support that keeps the airway open, stabilising the collapsed cartilage and allowing for more efficient breathing. Unlike other devices, it does not completely block the tracheal lumen, allowing for more natural airflow. In addition, its smooth, flexible surface facilitates cleaning and reduces secretion build-up.

At ABTVet, we believe in solutions that give you air

Our commitment is to offer innovative, safe and effective devices such as silicone stents, based on scientific evidence and clinical experience. We work to ensure that every patient with respiratory distress (such as stenotic nares, soft palate elongation, laryngeal saccule eversion, laryngeal collapse, etc.) has a chance to breathe normally again.
